As you know, the Catholic Church in the United States-- together with many other religious bodies in the United States-- objects strenuously to recent governmental efforts to sharply curtail the exercise of religious liberty in this country. The issues involved range from the recent HHS mandate to efforts to limit the Church's freedom to minister to the immigrant community. In order to focus on these kinds of issues, not long ago, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops formed an ad hoc committee on Religious Liberty. I am happy to serve on that ad hoc committee. Under the auspices of the National Conference of Bishops, the ad hoc committee has prepared a document entitled Our First, Most Cherished Liberty. It is a thoughtful document and places the issue of religious freedom in the broader context of American history, Catholic tradition, and contemporary challenges. I encourage you to read it carefully, and give its content serious and thoughtful reflection.
The document may be found in English at the USCCB web-site, at the following link.

El documento se encuentra en Español en la pagina de web del USCCB, en el siguiente enlace.

I am sure I will have more to say about these issues as time progresses. In the meantime ¡Ánimo!
